Cleveland Clinic Martin North Hospital opened a new emergency room Sunday, marking the latest renovation to the downtown hospital completed by its new ownership. The second phase of the $20 million ER expansion is expected to be completed by October.

The new ER wing holds 17 beds, a reduction from the previous 21, Cleveland Clinic Martin Health spokesman Scott Samples said.

By the fall, the fully built-out ER is to include 33 beds. In 2019, the hospital typically saw 92 patients a day, with a high of 134, according to Samples.

In the new emergency department, all exam rooms are private — previously, some rooms could be shared — and will be larger and brighter. The rooms are designed to increase patient safety and create a more efficient workflow, helping move patients through the ER quicker, according to a news release.
